Dr. Subramanian Swamy

From post-graduation in Maths to a Ph.D. from Harvard in Economics, authoring research papers with Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson for Index Number and Simon Kuznets for GDP, to the hero of Emergency, becoming Kingmaker to Chandrashekhar, suggesting Liberalization which was later implemented by Dr. Manmohan Singh under PV Narasimha Rao's government, toppling Vajpayee's Government in a tea party, saving Ram Setu, crusading for Ram Mandir, and being an ultimate threat to the Gandhi family—these all fold into one character: Dr. Subramanian Swamy. He lived life on his own terms.

Introduction

Dr. Subramanian Swamy, known for his straightforward and bold statements, often creates waves, sometimes causing trouble for his own party. Today, as he celebrates his birthday, let's recall the contributions of Dr. Swamy in Indian politics, economics, and defense. He is one figure you can love or hate, but you certainly cannot ignore.

Kingmaker Swamy

Dr. Swamy's contributions are immense. He played a pivotal role in making Chandrashekhar the Prime Minister. During a random discussion in Parliament, he asked Chandrashekhar about his aspirations for the PM post. Chandrashekhar responded that it seemed impossible. Dr. Swamy then assured him that he could make it happen, which he did with the help of Rajeev Gandhi.

Drafted LPG Even Before It Was Introduced

As a brilliant economist who published research papers with Nobel Laureates like Paul Samuelson and Simon Kuznets, Dr. Swamy was a harsh critic of the socialist economic model India followed until 1991. When given the chance, he created a blueprint for economic liberalization for Chandrashekhar. However, the government didn't last long, and PV Narasimha Rao took over. Rao, a good friend of Dr. Swamy, offered him the Finance Minister post if he joined Congress. Dr. Swamy declined, and the task fell to Dr. Manmohan Singh, who implemented the Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization (LPG) policies.

Hashimpura Massacre

Dr. Swamy has always been a staunch advocate for Hindutva and has been criticized for his radical ideology. However, he sought justice for the 42 Muslims who were shot dead in cold blood during the Hashimpura massacre. He emphasized checking the role of then Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the incident.

Ram Setu

In 2007, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) filed a controversial affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that Ram Setu was not a man-made structure. Dr. Swamy came to the rescue, opposing the demolition for the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. He won against the odds, leading the Government of India to explore alternatives that would not harm Ram Setu, respecting the nation's faith.

Crusader Against Corruption

Dr. Swamy is widely regarded as a crusader against corruption. He has been involved in high-profile cases such as the 2G Spectrum, VVPAT, National Herald, and INX Media cases. Recently, he played a key role in sending P. Chidambaram to Tihar Jail in the INX Media case. He is a significant threat to the Gandhi family, with Congress frequently alleging that Dr. Swamy and the BJP are framing them. Dr. Swamy maintains that he is fulfilling the BJP's manifesto.

Life and Legacy

Dr. Swamy considers Lord Krishna as his idol and often refers to lessons from the Geeta and Mahabharat in his teachings. He is a man no one dares to ignore. Currently, he is focused on the Ram Mandir issue and is confident that the Supreme Court will make a favorable decision by November.

Dr. Swamy has lived his life on his own terms, unafraid of anyone, and continues to give a tough time to the enemies of the nation.
