"Kesari" is a tale that tells us about the valor of 21 soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment, who valiantly faced an army of 10,000 Afghan tribesmen.

The Battle of Saragarhi

The movie "Kesari" revolves around the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi, where a few Sikh soldiers chose to fight for the pride of their community over their duty or the orders of the British. The plot highlights the bravery and determination of these soldiers in the face of overwhelming odds.

Akshay Kumar as Havaldar Ishar Singh

Akshay Kumar stars as Havaldar Ishar Singh, a brave Sardar who took charge of Saragarhi Fort, which was mainly used by the British as a post office for transmitting messages between Lockhart Fort and Fort Gulistan. Ishar Singh was sent to Saragarhi for not obeying the orders of Lt. Lawrence.

Emotional and Historical Depth

The movie is full of emotions, from comedy and sarcasm to the loneliness of a soldier. The first part of the movie sets the tone for the latter half, which deals with the events of the 1897 battle. The historical accuracy of this event is very reliable, thanks to the messages sent by Sepoy Gurmukh Singh, the last soldier to be martyred in this battle.

Powerful Performances

"Kesari" is entirely based on the heroics of Havaldar Ishar Singh and how his troops fought for their dignity. Akshay Kumar embodies the role of Ishar Singh with all his might, delivering one of the most powerful performances of his career. Parineeti Chopra, although her screen time is minimal, plays a crucial role with all her heart. The supporting cast also delivers commendable performances, particularly Toranj Kayvon (Gulwarien), who convincingly portrays a Pashtun woman, and Ram Awana (Gulwarien Beheader), who stands out as the keeper of the fort.

Cinematic Excellence

While the music of the movie could have been stronger, the photography and cinematography are impressive, making the movie a complete package. "Kesari" is a valiant effort to depict such an important event in history, ensuring that the facts and figures are accurately presented.

The Legacy of the Battle of Saragarhi

The Battle of Saragarhi underscores that even though the Afghans killed all the soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment, they ultimately lost the battle. The heroic stand of the 21 martyrs prevented the Afghans from advancing to Lockhart and Gulistan, which they intended to conquer the same day. Thanks to "Kesari," the martyrdom of these soldiers will be immortalized and taught to future generations.
